Midinite Snacks Recap!

Special thanks to Brian Hubble for putting it together and Andy Wilhelm for putting it on! The show looks great and the turn out was fantastic. A good time was had by all and the after party at Boulevard Tavern was a mess of $5 bud and whiskey shots. The consensus was that Paul Ketterman's piece was the raddest, followed by awe and respect and a strong desire to possess for Kevin Cyr's work.

Put Your Body Where Your Mouth is...

Concerned about the energy crisis? Global warming? Overseas oil? Artist Andrei Molodkin, wants your body! This Paris based Russian artist, whose work you may remember from collabs with Supreme and Burton, has a high pressure machine that can render your dead body into oil to run your car(not that you'd be driving it, you'd be dead!), light a lamp, or into raw materials that he can then use to make into sculptures! Check out an article on this project here and more of his work here. So far he has a few willing participants but he's looking for more!

Erin Go Bragh!

Please, if you see this today---RUN! No beer should ever be green, especially on St. Patrick's Day! I'm all for Irish pride but this is the opposite. Not sure what part of getting drunk on St. Patty's is when it comes to being Irish proud but sounds good to me! Just don't do it with this stuff.

Two new tats!
Sweet goat head on top is from Big Steve @ Daredevil Tattoo as part of their Friday the 13th $13 tattoos ($20 w/mandatory tip). Pretty fucking rad for $20!
On the bottom is my $40 zombie tattoo from Annie Lloyd @ Three Kings Tattoo. I love it! Thinking of going back to get "Ah, ha, ha, ha, Stayin' Alive, Stayin' Alive" tattooed around it! Damn right it's the Bee-Gees motherfucker!
Thanks to both artists and shops for continuing to do something so cool.

The Nasty Sneak Preview!

So the zine is about to drop! Here's a little taste from our interview with Pat Berran...

Pat Berran, artist, musician, skateboarder, and friend. Proudly hailing from Woodbridge, VA, Pat currently resides in Brooklyn, NY after recently getting his MFA from Hunter College. I sat down with Pat to fill in some of my own gaps in who he is and how he got there. We discussed his early beginnings in those areas of art, music, and skateboarding and how they continue to shape his outlook on life. What I found most interesting and informative was how he became involved in all of them at about the same time. By the time he was 8, Pat was already skating, listening to the punk music that still inspires him today, and embarking on a lifelong relationship with making art. Now 20 years later Pat is still skating (and surfing and snowboarding), singing for the awesome band ¡Apeshit!, and making some serious abstract paintings that may just surprise you, coming from someone you might not expect.

A pic of his work...

Suppers
Acryllic, Oil, spray paint on panel
24" x 24"
2007

And a snippet of his rad deck collection...

Pat loves JFA!

Weapons of the Weak! Grass Mud Horse Lives!

Want some weird mixed in with your anti-censorship? Asia rules! Power to the people! Check out these two articles, here and here, and get lost in hundreds more I'm sure as the Chinese use the subtleties of language to stick it to their man. Internet censorship in China is so strict that the government can shut down offending speak with the relative ease of flipping a switch. So the citizens of that country have created an internet sensation out of a children's song (with some beats and rapping!) that uses the similarities between certain words, some innocuous and others with dirty double entendre! Probably helps to know the language but fun nonetheless. And these videos are bizzare especially the last one where at one point it appears that a conference call is going on between a whale tail and a blaxplotation martial artist, with avibrating phone in the middle. Awesome!

Bikin' in tha Citay

Pic of Affinity friend, Tone, on an Affinity track low pro!

Interesting article on cycling in the city. Recent city mandated improvements that benefit not only bikers but pedestrians as well. The everchanging relationship between cyclists and drivers and pedestrians as more people start biking, not only for fun and health, but commuting as well. And finally safety suggestions that would not only benefit cyclists but others a well. Having worked on a bike before I agree with messengers that it's not always feasible to follow certain rules of the road, like one way streets. But I do have to say that I personally hate going against traffic, as I'm sure most do, except for some crazy motherfuckers out there. Riding on the sidewalk is just not cool. And I'm not one to terrorize pedestrians in crosswalks by blowing past them all super close. But I do run lights. Pretty funny anecdote about the old lady crossing the street. The author is clearly waiting at the light and she's all nervous and confrontational, saying "are you gonna stop?" "How do I know you're not going to go?" And then as she's going 2 other cyclists blow past her and she turns to the author, still waiting, and says "See? You were going to run me over!" WTF? Reminds me of a time in Chelsea when I was rolling up on a red light, slowing to a stop cuz of traffic, not going more than a couple of miles an hour, and not near anyone when some huge chelsea gym queen took it upon himself to rush over and kick me off my bike! Fucked my back wheel up. I didn't hesitate and I punched that motherfucker right in the face before remembering that I had things on me that wouldn't go down too well if the popo showed up so I took off. I wanted to kill that fucker. And this was right after almost getting killed by a bus, earlier in the day. Ah livin' and bikin' in the citay.

WTF?

So money rich (is there any other kind? rich in friends? love? ok there are) gangsters in Russia have taken to tatting their cats as status symbols. For real? I mean it looks cool as fuck like you're straight up outta 007 Spectre shit but c'mon. Put the rubles back in the briefcase and go home already. Tacky. Oh and the cat looks doped up cuz it still is in this picture, from sedation. Nice.

Cable's fixed! CBGB RIP

No cable=no posts. Oh sadness. So I went to the John Varvatos store, the old CBGB, last night with some friends to see some lame band and drink free PBR. A friend of mine is in the employ of said brand. Weird going in there for the first time. Great that it doesn't smell like god knows what anymore but not sure how to feel about the change. It's not like JV bought the place out from underneath CBGB. Hilly Kristal was old and we all know about the rent increases. I guess in a way it's "cool" that someone like JV came along and tried to preserve some of the old place even if he's using it as a way to lend cred to his capitalistic venture. But hell, CBGB's became a brand itself so nothing new there. And it's cool that JV is bringing in bands, every Thursday from what my friend says, even if they are lame. Once again, nothing new there. CBGB's was always an easy gig for less than stellar bands. So like I said, who knows. They've got some cool rock posters up, check out the Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, Melvins poster. Ok crowd, hot downtown girls and free crappy beer. Just wish the music was better.
