Arik Roper!

So I meant to post this last Friday but I forgot in my excitement of going to see the Melvins, which if you went count yourself lucky cuz it was 2 hrs of pure radness! Speaking of radness, Arik Roper's show at Gavin Brown Enterprise, is not to be missed. The small watercolors done in Arik's distinct style of pen and watercolor are amazing. The pictures of magick mushrooms make up his book on the same subject. The book itself is just as beautiful. I got a chance to meet and speak with Arik, which in and of itself was awesome as I'm a huge fan of his work and of a lot of the bands/clients he works with, and not surprisingly he's a really down to earth guy. Go check it out! 620 Geenwich St, upstairs!

What a cool and fun looking project! The organizer's gather art submitted to them, bundle it up into rolls of 10-15 pieces and then ride around on bikes to give away the rolls at random to people in the city, in this case Berlin. Awesome! More here. The next deadline is June 17th! Hmmm...

New York Street Advertising Takeover

From Wooster Collective, a group of street artists took over 120+ illegal billboards here in NYC over the weekend, reclaiming them for the sake of art, not advertising, by whitewashing and putting up their own work. AWESOME!

Draw with your bike!

From Studio Gelardi: Contrail is a tool for developing bicycle communities. As you ride, contrail leaves a faint chalk line behind your bike. The goal is to encourage a new cycle of biking participation by allowing the biking community to leave a unique mark on the road and to reclaim this crucial shared space.

The old cycle: More cars on the road --> more percieved danger for bikers --> fewer bikers on road --> even more cars on the road.

The new cycle: A few bicyclists ride with contrail a couple times per week --> faint lines on the road inspire curiosity and remind bikers where it's safe to ride --> new bikers are encouraged to ride and use contrail --> contrail lines get brighter as community grows.

Put Your Body Where Your Mouth is...

Concerned about the energy crisis? Global warming? Overseas oil? Artist Andrei Molodkin, wants your body! This Paris based Russian artist, whose work you may remember from collabs with Supreme and Burton, has a high pressure machine that can render your dead body into oil to run your car(not that you'd be driving it, you'd be dead!), light a lamp, or into raw materials that he can then use to make into sculptures! Check out an article on this project here and more of his work here. So far he has a few willing participants but he's looking for more!

Want some weird mixed in with your anti-censorship? Asia rules! Power to the people! Check out these two articles, here and here, and get lost in hundreds more I'm sure as the Chinese use the subtleties of language to stick it to their man. Internet censorship in China is so strict that the government can shut down offending speak with the relative ease of flipping a switch. So the citizens of that country have created an internet sensation out of a children's song (with some beats and rapping!) that uses the similarities between certain words, some innocuous and others with dirty double entendre! Probably helps to know the language but fun nonetheless. And these videos are bizzare especially the last one where at one point it appears that a conference call is going on between a whale tail and a blaxplotation martial artist, with avibrating phone in the middle. Awesome!

Eyeglasses for the Masses!

So my gf, who never reads my blog (guess she gets enough of me at home), asked me to blog this. It's from the Guardian UK, and is about some inventors who have devised a pair of eyeglasses that don't need an optician in order to change the prescription strength. It can all be done by the wearer, wherever they are, by adding or subtracting water from the lenses. The principal being the thicker the lens via the water the more powerful the magnification of the lens. Pretty sweet. Perfect for the world's poor the inventors have already distributed 30,000 pairs and are hoping to get a mil out to the poor of India. Awesome! And that's why my girl, with the heart of gold, rocks!

So the party was sick. Our friends' new band is officially calling themseleves Hibagon, which I totally had to get off of Affinity's site because when Alex told me on Saturday and I was drunk it sure didn't sound like "Hibagon"! Picture by John Prolly.

I'm an Asshole!

For not taking any pics of our Stowe adventure. I'd like to blame it on the excitement and generally average snow conditions on the first day, although it was awesome to have some spring like conditions in winter; the fact that it was raining low on the mountain the second day, so once again snow was fun but nothing extraordinary; and on the third day we had a great fucking day of powder riding, the day that pics would have been good but who has time when the gettin' is good and it's your last day? Stowe is now my favorite mountain in the East. Sorry Killington. You used to be my crown jewel but Stowe is steep, tons of trees and rocks, and there's never anybody there! Heaven. And did I mention powder? Too bad it's expensive and far away.

You're so vain...

Normally I like to hang in the background even though some of my friends and a few drinks might like to disagree with me on that point, but I was pleasantly surprised when my awesome friend Candice sent me a link to her work, which I had asked for because we are going to be in a group show, Midnight Snacks, together and I'll be hosting it digitally while it travels from Richmond to NYC to D.C. So she sends me her links w/o mentioning this photo that she took Wednesday night that I didn't even want to be a part of. But I think it's such a good photo, in general, especially with my c'mon now what are you up to attitude and the "oh boy" in the b.g. Genius! I didn't even realize she took it. She's good! Thank god for "childish"! This is awesome! Somebody hacked into road signs in Austin with warnings of imminent zombie attacks! Fucking brilliant! It was described by a public works official as a "pretty childish prank". Good, this fucked up world needs more of these. So in that spirit here's an article on how to create your own "childish prank". Of course, we here at Dienasty certainly don't condone this type of monkey wrenching, of course. So I guess it's no longer "secret" that Kylesa is going to be playing The Charleston tonight along with Tombs, Tournament, Black Anvil, and The Brass. It's gonna be SICK!!!

Awesome show!

So the show at Union Pool was fucking fantastic! Apeshit opened up with a sick set of speed laced eye jabs and gut punchers. Gotta give these guys a hand, Pat and Jonny, just got off a plane from South America earlier in the day and came and played this show like it was nothing! Next up was Ancient Sky, who describe themselves as psychedelic, rock, gospel, apt yes. I guess I'm a big "stoner rock" fan, which some bands hate but to me it's a compliment and these guys were intense. Solid dramatic waves of sonic groovieness. And last but certainly not least were Hull, who released a malestorm of brutal headbangers. Their encore fucking rocked! Thanks for the sore neck! I'm still broken from your set. 

Next up for Ancient Sky is January 9 @ Matchless Bar at Driggs and Manhattan Ave in Greenpoint Brooklyn, 8pm. Get stoned and go! Hull will be playing on Dec. 19 @ Fontanas, 105 Eldridge in Manhattan, 8pm with Zozobra, The Austerity Program, Heavy Winged and Cowards. Get drunk and stoned, go and try not to hurt yourself! Apeshit's playing again soon, keep you posted.
